This week, we learned about how extra layers of fat help to keep the arctic animals warm. We placed one hand in a ziplock bag protected by a blubber layer (Crisco) and one hand in the cold water. I didn't take students long to realize which hand was colder!
We also dipped one finger in petroleum jelly (to represent the oil on penguin feathers) to test if the coating would keep our finger warm. It worked! Although I would not recommend covering yourself with Crisco or petroleum jelly and swimming at the beach when it's cold as one student suggested. Yuck!

The students made snacks today during small groups. They were able to choose 10 treats that they felt represented who they were at school. Before we ate our snack, we showed our friends what was in our cup. Even though each one was different, we agreed that they all looked good!
Scrabble Cheez-It: Love to learn Mini sandwich cracker: A little bit silly (cheesy) Mini marshmallow: Tenderhearted Pretzel twist: Gives great hugs M & M: Very sweet Popcorn: A little crazy (pops all over the place!) We mixed all the remaining snacks together and took home a mixed baggie. Enjoy your extra day this weekend and give, care, share, love to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. |
