The students had so much fun at Field Day today. They participated in 16 different sports themed stations and were exhausted by the end. Which station was your child's favorite?

We learned all about bees this week and how important they are to keeping Earth healthy. The kids loved singing our bee parts song (I'm assuming this because they kept singing it all week....all the time!).
Here it is if you want to sign it with your child for the rest of the weekend: Sung to Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes Head, Thorax, Abdomen (I have 6 legs) Head, Thorax, Abdomen (I have 6 legs) 5 eyes 2 antenna 1 mouth 4 wings Head, Thorax, Abdomen (I have 6 legs) Our caterpillars are forming chrysalises (or at least we think they will be in a chrysalis by Monday).
The biggest caterpillar has been hanging on the top of the cup since Friday morning. In the afternoon, each student carefully studied the caterpillars and we all said goodbye. Hopefully by Monday they will not be caterpillars anymore! We learned so much about our little winged friends this week. Our caterpillars are growing even quicker than your children! We acted out the butterfly life cycle and learned that Eric Carle was wrong! Butterflies form a chrysalis, not a cocoon. We also learned a lot of new vocabulary: metamorphosis, larva, pupa, instar, molt/shed and migration.
We also asked a lot of questions: Why are there webs inside the cup? What are the little brown balls? What are the black things? When will they be butterflies? This is one of my favorite units, because I love watching the students engage in scientific inquiry. Butterflies are familiar enough for kids that they feel comfortable with the subject, but fascinating enough to keep them engaged for weeks! |
