Yesterday I sent an email assuring parents that Thursday would be a "normal" day (no field trips or field day or testing scheduled). So what is normal?
Well, today, "normal" was lumbering around the carpet on all four appendages walking like an elephant, using our sense of smell to find "prey" (cherry scented pom poms) like lions, and eating goldfish using only our mouths like a giraffe. FYI: a giraffe's neck is not long enough to reach the ground, so it has to spread its front legs wide to drink or eat anything off the ground. We also weeded and picked tomatoes and radishes from our garden, washed our food and enjoyed a snack. We had a bizarre day in PreK today! A book MADE me read all sorts of ridiculous words (one student even said that the book was "out of control") AND you children ate and (for the most part) liked vegetables!
We read, The Book With No Pictures and the kids loved it, because it is so funny. The author "requires" the reader to say all sorts of silly things (like "I am a monkey"). I love it, because it is such a good instructional tool to teach concepts of print (letters form words/words form sentences and we can read the sentences from left to right, top to bottom to tell a story). Concept of print is an essential pre-reading skill. We also ate flowers (broccoli), roots (carrots), seeds (peas), and leaves (lettuce). Some of the students were a little reluctant, but most of them found something they liked! To celebrate Exceptional Children's week, we have been experiencing what it would be like to be blind. During the week, all students (who volunteer) will have the opportunity to be "blind" during one of our times in line. So far, they have done an excellent job helping each other to stay on track! Hopefully, everyone will have a chance to participate this week!
We are discussing veterinarians in class this week (along with other doctors). The students have had fun playing with our vet prop box. We are also reading a lot of pet books, so don't be surprised if you child wants a pet iguana when they come home!
On Wednesday, we pretended to be paleontologists in the most delicious way...by extracting chocolate chips from our cookies! The students used a special "tool" to carefully remove the chips (bones) from the cookie (earth). We were able to use a lot of our dinosaur vocabulary during the experiment and finished by eating all the bones and dirt (I bet you never thought your child's teacher would tell you that!).
We experimented with different objects during STEMSday to determine which one would slide the fastest.
What were the determining factors? Slide (flat side) or roll (like a ball)? Light or heavy? Wood or plastic? Do wheels matter? Size? The students took turns racing the objects down the slide making an observation, and choosing what they thought would be a faster object. We had fun on our field trip last week. The students visited the bakery, produce, meat, and dairy departments.
