Technically no, but in PreK you can! We watched a Sid the Science kid super fab lab all about nests and listed the things birds used to make their homes.
We used sticks (pretzels) feathers (coconut) mud (peanut butter and a little bit of chocolate icing) We must have made pretty fantastic nests, because the birds laid eggs (jelly beans) in our soft, warm, inviting nests!

It all started off with an innocent comment. I love pickles.
This sparked a vivid lunch conversation about how pickles "grow" (psst...it's not on a pickle tree) and ended with one of my favorite PreK questions, "Can we do that?". It takes about a week or two for a student inquiry to come to fruition, but today we made pickles! The students did everything (except cutting the cucumber, Ms. Butler had that job). We worked as a team and washed the cucumbers and dill weed, peeled the garlic, measured the spices and filled the jars with brine. Our noses were overloaded with the smell of dill weed and garlic cloves (don't worry, we had extras that we passed around, touched, and smelled). Tomorrow we will try our homemade pickles! You may want to ask your child (1.) Did you try the pickles and( 2.) Did you like the pickles? as a follow up questions of the week. My fingers are crossed that we all at least try them! We learned about the Maasai people in Kenya and Tanzania by watching a Sesame Street video series shows how children live in different countries. The students seemed to enjoy watching how other children lived, but they were most interested in the animals! We decided that it would be more fun to walk into our backyard and see a giraffe roaming the savanna, then a raccoon in our garbage can!
PreK learned about the games from a long time ago (although I played the clothes pin game at my 6th birthday party!).
We played the clothes pin drop, ring toss, ball and cup, and what's in the basket. The students asked if we could play some of the games at school. The clothes pin drop will be added to our centers next week. After playing at Massie, we went to Forsyth Park for a picnic and playground! It was a fun day! |
