We are spending a lot of time talking about hibernation this week and today we found out why a bear hibernates.
Our hibernating bear (a stick of butter kept in a cooler) keeps all his fat so he can awake as a healthy bear when Spring comes. A bear who searches for food all winter (a stick of butter that the students carried around all day) "melts" his fat and won't be able to make it through the winter. It's a little simplified, but the students loved taking turns babysitting the active butter bear all day! I loved the looks on other teacher's faces when they would ask a student what was in the bag followed by, "It's our active butter bear. He's melting. He really should have hibernated like the other bear."

One of our fantastic students built a dance floor for us on Friday. She invited all of her friends to come to the dance party! I put on some Kids Bop and let the fun begin. Sorry the pictures are so blurry! They are action shots.
We had a VERY messy STEMsday today! The students participated in a variety of winter themed activities including snow slime, melting ice, and exploding rainbow snow! They had so much fun melting ice, that several of the children wanted to melt more ice during center time.
Students can pretend to be elves in centers this week. Students can "work" in the baking/decorating center, the mail room, or make toys. We also have holiday themed play-doh accessories and coloring activities for our artistic elves.
We worked really hard (like Pilgrim children) today making butter from cream. Almost all of the students tried the butter. Did your child like it?
I guess I didn't look as "dwarfy" as I thought I did! Not one of the students knew who I was (some of them were still confused after I told them). I guess Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs isn't relevant anymore?
On Tuesday, Kindergarten had firefighters, ambulances, and police officers come for a visit. PreK was GREEN with envy to say the least. When they raised the rescue ladder, all of a sudden our field trip to the fire station was forgotten! We couldn't wait to be in Kindergarten.
Some of the students chose to engineer a solution to save Humpty Dumpty on Friday. After several unsuccessful attempts (shells do not soften the fall), the students came up with a plan and were able to try with a REAL egg.
The students used an upside down hat (so he wouldn't roll away) and stuffed crushed up paper, Kleenex, and a plastic bag into the hat to soften the fall. It worked! If Humpty would have had your children around at the point of the fall, he would have survived. During our small group math lesson, we "ran out of paper". I told the students that we would just have to find a different way to draw our shapes. Shaving cream on the table makes a wonderful sheet of paper! By Friday, I wasn't fooling anyone...they knew my trick!
