It all started with a book about penguins. A penguin mama, to be specific. This penguin mama swam and ate and swam and ate and swam (you get the picture).
At the end of the story, one student raised their hand and asked why the penguin mama ate the fish when she swam instead of picking up the fish and eating it like we do. I love teachable moments, so I had all the students stand up and "glue" their hands together. I had them straighten their arms (because penguins don't have elbows like we do) and try to eat something from their hand. After all the students sat back down and we talked about how penguins eat and why, the same student raised her hand again, "I think they should find the fairy queen and ask her to just give them elbows." Alas, I was out smarted by a Preschooler again!

Technically it would have been 100 days before Hurricane Matthew changed our schedule! Se la vie!
Even if it wasn't quite the 100th day, the kids had a great time counting their snacks to take home. My favorite quote was, "I can't wait to go home to get sugared up!" We introduced the concept of counting by 10's as we filled up our baggies. The students counted 10 (pretzels or peanuts) into their cup and then dumped it in the bag. If you do that 10 times, you reach 100! The students also weighed their own 100 items on the balance scale. Each table weighed their heaviest bag to see which student had the heaviest! Students have been learning to live like Dr. King. We talked about loving one another even if someone looks different then you. We also talked about ways to remain peaceful if we disagree with someone. Using the linking people one of the small groups decided to make them into a heart. They were so proud of their work, I decided to display it here :)
I enjoyed hearing about your child's winter break. It sounds like the students had fun with thier families, received lots of presents, and some have been busy making you treats in their new Easy Bake Ovens. Mmmmmm....a quarter sized cookie heated by a lightbulb and topped with an inch of frosting and half a bag of sprinkles (at least that is how my daughter made them!).
We are working on our letter sounds and reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom this week. We are also talking about the difference between numbers and letters and working on matching equal sets. |
