A new friend is hiding in our class this week. Sammy may be a little shy, but by Friday, I hope Sammy is ready to have a "sleepover" at a Pre-K friend's house. On Fridays a student will be randomly chosen to take Sammy home. The only thing I ask is that Sammy return on Monday. If it is a busy weekend, Sammy is perfectly happy sitting in the bag and watching your amazing family :)
If you child chooses to have "adventures" with Sammy, feel free to jot down a few sentences in Sammy's travel log or have your child draw a picture of their adventure. Sammy loves going to the grocery store, watching extra curricular activities, and eating dinner with the family. I hope this is a fun experience for your child! My daughters still remember when their Pre-K mascot visited our house for the weekend.

Students have access to the art center every day during centers (as some of you found out when your child brought home 10 rolled up canvases last week!). They can paint at the easel; make jewelry; draw with markers, crayons, and pencils; or make collages. Every Thursday, they are exposed to an artist and EVERYONE is encouraged to paint. Two weeks ago we learned about Vincent Van Gogh. We discussed a few of his paintings and read a book about the Starry Night. Last week we painted with watercolors to make our own masterpiece. All of their creations will be on display on September 6th during the PTA Open House, but here a a couple of samples of what they were working on. We move onto Benny Andrews this week. He was born in rural Georgia and teaches us to "draw what we see".
Did your child bring home a sticky substance on Friday (three students did not want to take it home)? We made rubber globs in STEM! Each student stirred glue and most decided it was boring. THEN...we added the science crystals (borax and water) and the magic began to happen. "It's sticking!" "It feels slippery." "Gross, it's slimy." Most of the students were willing to pull the sticky, slimy substance off of the stick and roll it around in their hands. The substance became less sticky and we could even bounce it on the table! I think it was my favorite activity we have done thus far. Pre-K students are great scientists and curiosity runs high in this group!
Wow! What a week. We are off and running in Pre-K. All of our classroom helpers have been assigned (each student will have a job one day and a "day off" the next), most of our centers have been opened, and our schedule is being finalized (we are making minor changes to accommodate student needs).
I am so very proud of the students for the FANTASTIC job they did during the fire drill on Friday. Our school will practice fire drills once a month. This is an exciting month for the children. We will be traveling to Africa on Tuesdays over the next few weeks. We will learn about animals, structures, music and food. |
