I love dinosaur week in PreK!
We learned so many rich vocabulary words this week. Paleontologist: We worked as paleontologists is several ways. We used our tool to excavate the dinosaur. The students worked so hard, they were able to bring their dinosaur home. Students also used brushes during center time at the sand table to dig up dinosaur bones. Finally, we made imprints using dinosaur bones (see pictures below). Biped / Quadruped: I wanted to introduce the prefixes bi- and quad- in a fun way. We sorted dinosaurs into biped and quadruped groups. We made our own biped and quadruped dinosaurs. We walked like a biped or quadruped to our small groups. I have to admit, this was not my idea! One of the students wished that she was a quadruped during large group time and I though, why not? If you want to walk to group like a quadruped, you are more than welcome to! Pachycephalosaurus: We counted the syllables...whew!

We met Happy Harriet and Gloomy Gus this week. Happy Harriet eats mostly "anytime" food (healthy and nutritious) from the five food groups. Her body is strong, healthy, and full of energy. Gloomy Gus only eats "sometimes" food (provides low nutritional value). His body is slow and sluggish.
Students tried a variety of foods on Friday and we graphed our favorite. Nine of the twenty students tasted all four (cucumber, cantaloupe, dragon fruit, and pomegranate). The dragon fruit was the most popular! We read stories about birds and clouds and other things in the daytime sky this week. Our favorite activity was making it "rain" in our cloud jars. We watched the storm get darker in the cloud and then finally rain! One group moved their mason jars around the table and it sounded like thunder.
If your child is sad when you ask them about this activity, please let them know that the final group will get a chance the first day we return to school :) Stay safe and give your kids hugs from me! We had such a clever day on Friday! Students found multiple ways to represent the number 5.
If you ask the children what we did in math, they will probably say, "We played with blocks", however, they were practicing the early concepts of addition. Students had 5 blocks and were tasked with coming up with as many different ways to make 5 as they could. 0 blocks and 5 blocks 1 block and 4 blocks 2 blocks and 3 blocks 3 blocks and 2 blocks 4 blocks and 1 block 5 blocks and 0 blocks We even had one student who broke the blocks into 5 separate pieces. |
