It all started with a book about penguins. A penguin mama, to be specific. This penguin mama swam and ate and swam and ate and swam (you get the picture).
At the end of the story, one student raised their hand and asked why the penguin mama ate the fish when she swam instead of picking up the fish and eating it like we do. I love teachable moments, so I had all the students stand up and "glue" their hands together. I had them straighten their arms (because penguins don't have elbows like we do) and try to eat something from their hand. After all the students sat back down and we talked about how penguins eat and why, the same student raised her hand again, "I think they should find the fairy queen and ask her to just give them elbows." Alas, I was out smarted by a Preschooler again!
